What is an RF Power Amplifier?
An RF power amplifier is an electronic circuit whose core function is to amplify low-power RF signals to high power levels so that they can be effectively radiated through an antenna for long-distance transmission.
Key Technical Specifications:
Output Power: The maximum RF power the amplifier can provide. This is the most critical specification, determining the signal's transmission distance.
Efficiency: The amplifier's ability to convert the DC power of the power supply into useful RF output power.
Linearity: The amplifier's ability to maintain a constant ratio (i.e., perfectly reproduce) of the input signal with the output signal. Common linearity metrics include 1dB compression point (P1dB) and intermodulation distortion (IMD3).
Gain: The ratio of output power to input power, indicating the amplifier's "amplification factor," typically expressed in decibels (dB).
Bandwidth: The frequency range over which the amplifier can operate effectively while meeting all of its performance specifications.

Based on the transistor bias and on-time in the amplifier, RF PAs are divided into the following categories, each with its own advantages and disadvantages in efficiency and linearity:

A key feature is built-in monitoring circuitry, enabling them to withstand any fault operating conditions, such as overload, load mismatch, and thermal overload.
