What is a broadband amplifier?
A wideband rf amplifier is one that provides uniform and stable gain to its input signal over a very wide frequency range. "Broadband" here is a relative term, generally referring to a large ratio between the amplifier's operating bandwidth and its center frequency. If an amplifier's bandwidth covers several octaves (for example, the upper frequency is twice, five times, or even more than ten times the lower frequency), it is often called a broadband microwave amplifier.
Common Types of RF Broadband Amplifiers:
Distributed Amplifiers:
The input and output capacitances of multiple transistors are separately incorporated into artificial transmission lines (composed of inductors and capacitors). Signal waves propagate along the input transmission line, stimulating each transistor in turn, and their outputs are summed in phase on the output transmission line.
Features: They can achieve extremely wide bandwidth, but have low efficiency and a complex structure. They are commonly used in the front end of oscilloscopes and test equipment.
Feedback Amplifiers:
Negative feedback, such as through resistors, is introduced, sacrificing some gain in exchange for increased bandwidth and improved gain stability.
Features: Relatively simple design, and the core principle of most integrated broadband amplifiers.
Balanced amplifiers:
These amplifiers are constructed using two identical amplifiers and two 90° couplers. The couplers effectively isolate the input and output, improving impedance matching and stability, thereby extending the effective bandwidth.
Features: Excellent performance and widespread use in the microwave frequency band.
