What are TR modules?
The T/R module is the most fundamental and critical unit within an active phased array radar system, responsible for executing the independent signal transmission and reception functions of each individual antenna element.
A standard T/R module typically integrates the following four major functional units:
- Transmit Channel
- Receive Channel
- Transmit/Receive Switching
- Amplitude and Phase Control
Why are T/R modules so important?
The performance of the T/R module directly determines the overall performance of the active phased array radar system.
- Power Determines Detection Range: The higher the output power of the T/R module's transmit channel, the greater the radar's detection range.
- Noise Figure Determines Sensitivity: The performance of the low-noise amplifier (LNA) within the receive channel determines how faint an echo signal the radar is capable of detecting. An excellent noise figure translates to a longer detection range and an enhanced capability to detect smaller targets.
- Amplitude and Phase Accuracy Determine Resolution and Anti-Interference Capability: The control precision of the phase shifters and attenuators directly impacts the accuracy of beam steering and the level of sidelobe suppression; this, in turn, determines the radar's angular resolution and its ability to counter electronic interference.
- Integration Level Determines System Size and Cost: By highly integrating functions—such as transmission, reception, control, and power supply—into a single compact module, phased array radars can be successfully deployed on space-constrained platforms, such as aircraft and naval vessels.
